A Quick Trip up to Sandal Castle
Do you have any local ruins or favourite places to visit similar to this?
While waiting for my car to finish it’s MOT a while ago, I had a ride up to Sandal Castle. It’s a brilliant ruin and the site of a historically important battle in the War of the Roses, as well as the location of a scene in Shakespeare’s Henry VI Part 3 (Act 1, Scene 2 if you’re wondering).
Fo me, this is the defining view of the ruins, looking out towards Emley Moor mast on the horizon.
Here’s an image from the first time I discovered this angle, around ten years ago shooting my project Weird Tales (the place is supposedly Haunted, and yes, the title is a Lovecraft reference!). Using a Mamiya RB67 and colour negatives (Remember those?)
I’ll soon dig out some of my previous work, including the Weird Tales series!
